I learned to read on my big brother Brian's AVENGERS comics. I felt love for their rebellious spirit, action, passion, melodrama, teamwork. Most of all by the superhero code that echoed the same fearless self-sacrifice and heroism I worshipped in STAR WARS.
Brian grew up to win the first EISNER AWARD for Best Digital Comic. His graphic novel MOM'S CANCER featured himself, my sister Brenda, my Mom, and me as Kid Sis. Mom and I started blogs and corresponded with thousands of cancer survivors and caregivers globally. Mom died, and I continued blogging about Kid Sis in Hollywood. My readers morphed into comic geeks and cineastes, and people who dig feisty, edgy, unconventional women.
Around this time, I graduated from the UCLA graduate program in screenwriting, and became an Associate Producer on a tiny feature film called CONVENTIONEERS. It was nominated for an INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARD in the John Cassavettes category, which was apt as it tipped its hat to Medium Cool. Also in the category were two crowd favorites: one shot for over ten times the budget of CONVENTIONEERS. Against all odds, CONVENTIONEERS became David and took home a SPIRIT AWARD; a Goliath industry recogniton.
From there I was able to put my two film degrees to use, and raised the money independently to write, direct, and produce THE COMMUNE. It is currently on the festival circuit.
